The guide › Burgas
Burgas is Bulgaria’s fourth-largest city, on the southern stretch of the Black Sea coast. The contest venue, Arena Burgas, opened on 18 May 2023 and sits within the city, a short drive from the seafront and the Sea Garden.
Flying in
Burgas airport (BOJ) handled 1.8 million passengers in 2025, with 51 airlines serving 67 destinations, according to Fraport Bulgaria. It is a seasonal airport: the summer timetable is much larger than the winter one, and the contest falls in May, just before the peak.
The EBU names four gateway airports for visitors who cannot fly directly to Burgas: Sofia, Varna, Plovdiv and Istanbul. From there, the transfer is by road or by domestic flight.
| Gateway | To Burgas by road | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Sofia (SOF) | about 5 hours | Largest international gateway in Bulgaria |
| Varna (VAR) | about 2 hours | Closest of the Bulgarian gateways |
| Plovdiv (PDV) | about 3 hours | Second city, inland |
| Istanbul (IST) | about 4 hours | Border crossing time varies |
Drive times are indicative and depend on the route and the border crossing; they are not official transfer times published for the contest.
Where to stay
Burgas has around 12,300 beds in roughly 1,300 establishments inside the city. In September 2026, 98% of the beds listed for the 11–16 May window were already unavailable, according to Stay Burgas; a press report put the figure at 99%. Rates for the contest week have been quoted at three to seven times their normal level, with one report citing more than €4,000 a night.
The neighbouring resorts along the coast — Pomorie, Nessebar, Sunny Beach — still have stock, but they add a daily transfer to the arena and, in May, a much quieter season than July or August.
The arena
Arena Burgas holds 4,100 people in its sports configuration, 6,100 with the telescopic stands extended, and up to 15,000 for a concert. The Eurovision configuration will be smaller than the concert figure, because the stage, the production desk, the cameras and the backstage areas consume part of the floor. The EBU has not published the contest capacity.
What else is happening
The contest week runs from 10 to 15 May 2027. The Eurovision Village and the EuroClub — the fan zones that usually open alongside the contest — have not been announced for Burgas, and neither has their programme.
